research fields

The scientific interests, to be considered essentially within the disciplinary scientific sector BIO \ 15 - Pharmaceutical Biology, are aimed at the extraction and isolation of compounds of natural origin from plants of the Calabrian flora (endemic and otherwise) and their structural determination by means of spectroscopy techniques (NMR, IR and GC / MS, MS), to the determination of the basic biological activity (cytotoxic, antioxidant, and enzymatic inhibition activity) and also to the design and synthesis of structural analogues of the compounds of natural origin isolated. The research is based on the systematic study of plants belonging to the Mediterranean flora (with particular attention to the Calabrian endemic ones) in order to isolate biologically active compounds to be considered as phytochemical markers also useful for the purpose of a chemotaxonomic classification, allowing to highlight the distinctive characteristics of the biodiversity of the species involved. The phytochemical analysis of the extracts and of the individual isolated active ingredients is completed with the research line concerning the characterization of the basic biological activity. The tests mainly concern the determination of cytotoxic activity (on different cell lines both of tumor and normal type), determination of antioxidant activity (with the techniques of DPPH, beta-carotene and TBA test) and enzymatic inhibition activity , in particular alfa-amylase, acetylcholinesterase and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). These studies have been extended to food-type plants in order to correlate the chemical composition (especially of the non-nutritional components). The studies currently underway complete the picture of the analysis of compounds of natural origin with a line of research that involves the design and formulation of health products (food supplements) aimed primarily at the prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic syndrome
