1991-1993 Two-years fellowship from Italian National Research Council (CNR) at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry of the CNR, Montelibretti - Research Area of Rome 1, Rome (Italy). Research developed: use of stable and radioactive isotopes for the synthesis of substituted heterocycles as radiopharmaceuticals and radiotracers in positron emission tomography.

He works at the “Laboratory of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry”, Department of Pharmacy, Nutritional and Health Sciences, University of Calabria, head of the Research Group "Organic Synthesis and Analysis of Complex Matrices”. He is author of 96 publications in International Journals of high impact, 1 patent, and more than 90 contributions to National and International Congresses.

 

Research interests:

(a) synthetic methods for the preparation of analogues of biomolecules;

(b) synthesis of modified nucleosides and nucleotides having heterocyclic structure;

(c) amino acid and peptide chemistry;

(d) development of synthetic procedures for structural modification of natural amino acids;

(e) design, synthesis and characterization of protease inhibitors;

(f) total synthesis of non-proteinogenic amino acids;

(g) steroid chemistry;

(h) application of 1D- and 2D-, homo and heteronuclear, high-resolution NMR techniques for targeted and untargeted metabolomics of vegetable and human complex matrices;

(i) Qualitative and quantitative NMR (qNMR) determination of the chemical profile of natural matrices and derived foodstuffs, aided by high-throughput Mass Spectrometric applications for the determination of molecular profiles;

(j) High-resolution NMR techniques for the structural investigation of toxic metal complexes with biologically active ligands in water and organic environments;

(k) High-resolution NMR techniques for the investigation of environmental pollutants.

(l) Synthesis and self-assembly of natural and modified amino acid-based nanomaterials for smart applications as “lab-chips”;

(m) Functionalization of carbon nanotubes with natural substances and matrices in preparing nanomaterials for health and environmental protection.

(n) Preparation of intermediates, biomarkers and isotopically enriched standards for profiling e fingerprinting investigations in metabolomics, metabonomics, lipidomics, foodomics, allergonomics, forensic chemistry.
