Research Activity

MAIN_RESEARCH_EXPERIENCE
Prof. Pezzi was Research Fellow in the Prof. William Rainey’s Lab, in Dallas and during that period, using the adrenal cancer cell line H295R as experimental model, he worked on molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of enzymes involved in adrenal steroidogenesis, contributing to clarify the pathways involved in these processes. The collaboration with Prof. Rainey's Lab in this field is still ongoing and has yielded the publication of 12 full papers.

In 1999 he became assistant Professor of General Pathology at the University of Calabria and from that period on his main research interest has focused on molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of aromatase in several normal and tumor tissues, such as testis, breast, ovary and adrenal tissues. On this topic Prof. Pezzi is co-author of 12 full papers. Some of these studies were carried on in collaboration with prestigious and international research labs such as the one headed by Prof. Evan Simpson and Dr. Colin Clyne (PHIMR, Monash Medical Center Clayton, Australia).

In 2001 he started a collaboration with the labs of Prof. Francesco Fallo from Faculty of Medicine at the University of Padova, which have years of experience on basic and clinical research on adrenal tumors and a large availability of normal adrenocortical tissues and tumor tissues. Thanks to this collaboration we proved overexpression of aromatase and ER in adrenocortical tumors and highlighted the ability of estradiol to enhance H295R cells proliferation. This collaboration allowed to publish 9 full papers and is still active. In the last years his research focused mainly on the study of signaling pathways involved in ACC growth. To support his research from 2011 he received  three grants funded by AIRC. Moreover thanks to another project funded by Italian University Minister (MIUR, FIRB), his research group investigated in collaboration with others Italian research teams several molecular mechanisms involved in the genesis and progression of ACC. Recently, in collaboration with Prof. Lisanti’s lab, at the University of Manchester, UK, Prof. Pezzi started to investigate the potential master regulators involved in reprogramming metabolism in endocrine tumors including ACC.
