The research interests of Professor Iemma focus on polymer science with particular attention to the preparation, modification, and characterization of polymeric materials with functional properties for applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, including stimuli responsive drug delivery systems responsive, functional polymers and Carbon Nanocomposites

Recent research interests:

1) Polymeric hydrogels for controlled drug release: Synthesis of hydrophilic microbeads by radical copolymerization of natural (modified polysaccharides, proteins, etc.) or synthetic macromonomers with proper comonomers designed to induce stimuli responsive properties. New polymerization methodologies based on redox polymerization and enzymatic catalysts.

2) Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for applications in pharmaceutical, food and analytical field. Imprinted polymers prepared by bulk or precipitation polymerization are prepared. These materials, able to recognize and retain selectively a template molecule are proposed for drug delivery applications. Molecular imprinting technology is also adopted to prepare imprinted hydrogels able to recognize/release drugs in particular environmental conditions (pH, Temperature, etc.)

3) Functional polymers for biomedical applications. Polymers with biological properties (e.g. antioxidant, and antimicrobial) are synthesized by covalent conjugation of bioactive agents to macromolecular systems. The presence of such molecules confers several biological properties, such as the inhibition of enzymes involved in specific pathologies, and anticancer activity.

4) Hybrid materials for applications in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields. Synthesis of polymer-carbon nanotubes and polymer-graphene oxide composites as bioactive materials with antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial properties. Synthesis of hybrid hydrogels able to modulate the release of bioactive agents in response to the application of an external electric or magnetic field.
