Author of more than 450 publications of which more than 230 appeared on indexed (scopus and ISI Web of knowledge) Journals, 25 book chapters and more than 250 abstracts of national and international congress communications. Inventor  of a patent for the use of Azithromycin as neuroprotectant in stroke actually in clinical development. Co-editor with high caliber researchers such as Bernhard Brune (Erlanghen, Germania), Maria Tiziana Corasaniti (Catanzaro, Italy), Marco Cosentino (Varese, Italy), Oliver J. Dolly (Dublino, Irlanda), Stuart A. Lipton (La Jolla, USA), Salvador Moncada (UK), Carlo Nucci (Rome, Italy), Neville Osborne (UK), Shinobu Sakurada (Sendai, Japan), Tsukasa Sakurada (Fukuoka) of 9 volumes produced by prestigious worldwide recognized press editors such as Elsevier plc, CRC Press e Portland Press. Since 1996 his scientific production has been cited more than 8000 times with h-index of 48 (google scholar) and > 5500 citations and h-index of 41 (for Scopus) and included in the list of Top Italian Scientists  and Top 20 Scientists of the University of Calabria for VIA Academy.


Prizes, other academic recognitions and research funding

Recipient of a Travel Grant from the National Council of Research (CNR, Rome) in 1998, he has obtained for the period 1989-1991 a relevant MRC Research Grant and a CNR-British Council Bilateral Research Grant for the period 1992-1993.

Winner of the prestigious Galen Young Researcher Award for the year 1998 for having discovered that the calcium-dependent, neuronal isoform, of nitric oxide synthase can be induced by specific pharmacologic stimuli.

Since 1994 receives university funds (ex quota 60%). From 1996 to 2000 he has received annual funds from CNR and, from this same agency, has received a three year funding (2001-2004) in the frame of the national Biotechnology project. He has received three year funding in the frame of FIRB (2001-2004) and bi-annual funding from 1998 to 2019 in the frame of Cofin/PRIN projects by the Ministry of University and Research. Recipient of funding in the frame bilateral agreements, i.e. Italy-Spain (since 1998; MIUR) and Italy-USA (since 2005; MinSal) and funding from Calabria Region (2005).   


Activity for Higher Scientific Education

Founder and Coordinator since 1998 (XIV Cycle) through 2009 (XXV Cycle) of PhD course in Pharmacology and Biochemistry of Cell Death opened with Decree of the Ministry of University and Research based at the University of Calabria, Rende (Cosenza) in consortium with the University “Magna Graecia” of Catanzaro and the University “Tor Vergata” of Rome. The PhD course received public funds from the superior Ministry and the Universities as well as from public and private agencies for covering the salary of twenty additional bursaries with a net value of approximately one million euros. In the frame of the higher scientific education several international congresses have been organized among which the successful series of workshops, starting in 1996 through 2009, on Apoptosis in Biology and Medicine of which the XI held from 12 to 15 september 2008 at the Tohoku Pharmaceutical University of Sendai, Japan (see http://gbagetta.jimdo.com).


Chairman of international congresses on chronic pain such as 1)  “Novel Pain Therapeutics: From Basic Research to Clinical Translation and Rehabilitation” organized under the egidas of the Italian and Japanese Societies of Pharmacology and the Italian Society of Neurological Rehabilitation, 23rd-25th October 2019, University of Calabria, Rende (CS) Italy; 2) In 2019, from 11th to 12th april, at the University of Calabria, in collaboration with the Section for the Veterinary Drug Committee of the Ministry of Health, he organized “One Health Approach o Fight Antimicrobial Resistance”; 3) In 2017, from 4th to 5th may, at the University of Calabria, he is the President of the monothematic meeting on “Aging Brain: In Search For Novel Neurotherapeutics” fully supported by the Italian Society of Pharmacology; 4) In 2014, from 13th through 14th June, at the University of Calabria, he organized the first national congress on “Drug Repurposing and Bejond: the Fundamental Role of Pharmacology” fully supported by the Italian Society of Pharmacology;  5) “New Trends in Pain Research” organized with the support of the President of the Italian Republic, 13th-15th september, 2012, Parghelia, VV, Hotel Porto Pirgos); 6) In 2011, from 30th september  through 1st october, at the Hotel Panta Rei, Parghelia (VV), he organized the national congress entitled “Stroke: Target Validation and Clinical R&D of Novel Neurotherapeutics”; 7) In 2010, from 22nd to 24th September organized the international meeting on  “Molecular Targets for Novel Pain Therapeutics: From basic research to clinical translation,  Hotel Porto Pirgos, Parghelia, VV.

He is actually member of the PhD course in Translational Medicine held at the Department of Pharmacy Health Science and Nutrition, University of Calabria.

Component of committees for final evaluation of PhD students at national (i.e. University of Milan; University Federico II of Naples) and international (i.e. University of Konstanz, Germany; Leicester, UK; Dublin City University, Ireland) universities.

In 2016 (September 19th-22nd) he has been invited keynote speaker at the International Biological Science Conference held in the University Rectorate of Novi Sad (Serbia). 


Research themes

- Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neuronal degeneration and death (experimental neuroAIDS; brain ischemia, glaucoma, seizure-related brain damage).

- Development in vitro and in vivo of experimental models of neuronal death for testing drugs and natural products (either of animal, i.e. dendrotoxins, and vegetal origin, i.t. tetanus toxin, essential oil of bergamot etc.) for their neurotoxic and neuroprotective profile.

- Mechanisms underlying neuropathic pain and identification of molecular and cellular targets for the development of novel and more efficacious drugs.
