INTRODUCTION

While Engineers undoubtedly represent, for society, those who, through their problem-solving forma mentis, are at the forefront of technological development and innovation, equally rapid changes in modern society requires modern-day Engineers to be responsive and flexible, capable of transforming and adapting their knowledge into pragmatic and effective solutions which satisfy the needs of a global society. This understanding lies at the foundation of the coursework, education and professional training offered at The Faculty of Engineering at UNICAL.

Such training also seeks an equilibrium between the quality of education gained and the modality of such training so to provide a solid knowledge base in engineering to the greatest number of students within a reasonable period of study, ensuring graduates immediate entry into the engineering profession and providing society with a pool of valid engineering professionals.  Not only does the Faculty of Engineering consider quality training its primary responsibility towards its students and their families, its educational programme is also a national  responsibility as graduates from our Faculty go on to form the national knowledge pool from which future competitive technological innovations will fuel national advancement.  To attain this equilibrium, the Faculty has opted to provide a sound foundation in primary areas of engineering rather than excessive specialization which may hinder the flexibility graduates will need to meet the demands of today's dynamic and rapidly changing engineering profession.  In addition, the modern requisite for flexible cross-disciplinary experts is evident by the fact that Engineering at UNICAL now offers a newer trans-disciplinary Degree in Building-Architectural Engineering, which brings together professional competence based on otherwise quite specialized international research knowledge.

Realizing that university studies, compared to compulsory education, may be, in many ways quite challenging for incoming students, the Faculty has established numerous incoming orientation programmes such as a highly organized network of pre-course tutoring services aimed at helping students solidify their knowledge in basic subjects which will form the foundation of their future university coursework.  In addition, events such as “Lessons on Campus” bring together students in their last years of high school so to provide information about the Faculty of Engineering.  Taking advantage of recent national changes and restructuring of tertiary education, the Faculty of Engineering has reformulated coursework so to provide its graduates a solid methodological foundation in engineering and a global understanding of the scientific basis underlying various fields of engineering.  In addition, so to render didactic information and university regulations totally accessible so that students can progress smoothly through their studies, the Faculty maintains an updated website so to provide students a database of news as well as institutional and professional regulations.  The utility of our Faculty website is evident from the fact that it is consulted by more than one million visitors a year.

Engineering is certainly not an easy choice.  However, those who choose to pursue a Degree and profession in Engineering secure entry into the global workforce in which the problem-solving forma mentis of an Engineer is a highly valued commodity.
