Overall Didactic Organization of the Engineering Faculty

Overall Didactic Organisation of the Engineering Faculty
As of the 2008/2009 Academic Year, degree courses at the Faculty of Engineering will be implemented in concordance to the Ministerial reform regarding didactics at tertiary institutions (D.M. 270/2004).
Experience has shown that the Degree Courses in the former reform of the Italian tertiary educational system (DM 509/) were unable to fully fulfil the goals of the reform, established 10 years ago.

Taking this opportunity, the Faculty of Engineering at UNICAL has updated its programmes so to provide students with a more extensive scientific knowledge-base within the respective branches of Engineering. In particular, coursework in Engineering has been further improved in the following manner:
- more coursework which reinforces foundation Engineering knowledge;
- centralisation of traditional Engineering coursework which is common across various sub-disciplines of Engineering;
- ensuring that credits gained per course directly correspond to the workload undertaken by students.

How to obtain a Degree in Engineering
The following graph illustrates the various paths towards a degree in Engineering.  It should be noted that, irrespective of the route and branch of Engineering chosen, all graduates receive a degree which enables them to immediately access the workforce of engineering at various levels of professionalism and competence. As noted earlier, the Faculty of Engineering at UNICAL also offers a 5-year second level specialist degree in Architecture-Building Engineering.

Available Degree Courses in Engineering
All degree courses offered at the Engineering Faculty at UNICAL award “educational credits” with each credit representing 25 hours of work for the student. This 25-h workload/credit represents the cumulative total work of lesson time, practicum, laboratories and time for autonomous study which students with sufficient foundation knowledge will need to acquire to attain the prescribed learning objectives. All credits assigned to each course in the 3-year first level degree and the second level specialist degree courses thus reflect this workload ratio. The learning objectives that full-time students should thus achieve per academic year amount to 60 credits, for a total of 1500h of study per year.  The first level degree is awarded following the successful completion of 180 credits while an additional 120 credits of coursework is required to complete a second level specialist degree.  Most courses are held in Italian, however English class notes are available in English as are office hours and exams.
