A Contamination Lab (CLab) is an open space, characterized for an informal environment, where students and graduates from different areas can interact, work as a team, gain and share knowledge, in a stimulating environment to develop innovative projects with business, cultural or social contents.
CLab Cosenza is promoted by the University of Calabria and funded by the National Operational Program Research and Competitiveness 2007/2013. The main purpose of the CLab is to actively involve a large number of students and teachers from all disciplinary areas in basic training and "warm up” projects (CLab Gym) and in the development of more ambitious, innovative, and interdisciplinary projects (CLab Challenge).
The activities are developed over six-month periods. Participants are selected among dynamic, competent and motivated students and graduates, with a particular attention to foreign students (a 10% share is reserved to foreign students).
The first cycle was started in April 2014 to be concluded in October 2014, with the admission of 74 participants to the CLab Gym and 9 ideas to the CLab Challenge, promoted by as many groups and 34 participants. The selected ideas are geared to promoting social life on campus, products and services for the land, the environment and energy, digital craftsmanship. The winner was EnerJuice, a device for emergency charging; Laundry Link (laundry and social space in the Unical campus) and Acquaponica (integrated growth of plants and fish for ornamental, commercial and educational use) ranked second.
The second edition was launched in September 2014, in conjunction with the "Researchers' Night 2014", and applications were accepted until 26 October 2014. The activities started in November 2014 with 15 project ideas participating to the CLab Gym. The final Challenge was held on May 15, with the participation of 8 business ideas. The team BERK - Kilometric Rechargable Electronic Ticket ranked first and StoreUp – MADIVA solutions - NFC based digital receipt ranked in the second place.
The third edition was launched in February 2015 and the training activities started on April 15, 2015. On October 16th, 2015, four teams participated in the Final Challenge: Please! - smart shopping based on sharing economy principles and Charge Band - a device to exploit the body heat received the C-Lab prizes.
The fouth edition is now open!!! Applications on line until March 13, 2016 and now extended until March 30, 2016 for very few remaining positions. The activities will be developed between April and June 2016.

The Liaison Office (LiO) is the office of the University dedicated to the valorization of research results and technology transfer. Since 2009, the LiO organizes the Start Cup Calabria, a business plan competition for business ideas with high levels of knowledge and, since 2010, manages the Technest incubator for innovative start-ups. The Liaison Office is responsible for the operational management of the Contamination Lab.
